NARANJO DE BULNES · PICU URRIELLU GUIDED ASCENT

The guided climb to the Picu Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes with a climbing guide on any of its faces has become in recent years the most demanded adventure activity in Los Picos de Europa National Park.

Either by climbers who prefer to carry out their projects by the hand of a local mountain guide, who knows the place like the palm of his hand, or by people who do not usually practice climbing but want to ascend to the summit of the emblem that represents Asturias and Los Picos from Europe

HOW DOES THE ACTIVITY DEVELOP?

Normally they are two days of activity, although it is also possible to do it in one.

Example for the South Face of the Naranjo de Bulnes route – Day 1: Normally the meeting is in the Refugio de la Vega de Urriellu the day before the activity, about 7 pm. Once presented the guide will provide the necessary material to the participant, explain concepts and review the necessary material for the activity. During dinner, which is at 20 hours, we can chat and comment on all kinds of doubts and talk about the breakfast and departure schedule the next day. This schedule varies depending on the time of year and weather.

Day 2: We will leave already prepared from the hut along the path that will take us to the Canal de la Celada, through which in a short but intense climb we will border the entire north face of the Picu Urriellu. After finishing the canal we will continue climbing a more comfortable path below the imposing East side of the Naranjo de Bulnes. Normally the climbing is done in about four hours. After climbing and after going out to the southern amphitheater through the characteristic hole, we will still have to go up the short channel that takes us to the top edge and from here to the summit. Once at the summit we have time to eat something, take some photos and chat. Later we will begin the descent path towards the rappels of the southern amphitheater. We will make three rappels and we will arrive at the base where we will pick up and start the way down to the Refugio de la Vega de Urriellu along the same way. Normally between 2 pm and 4 pm you are back at the hut

A PIECE OF HISTORY

Since an August 5, 1904, Gregorio Pérez “el Cainejo”, pastor of Caín, and exercising this as guide of the Marquis of Villaviciosa (Pedro Pidal), the Picu Urriellu / Naranjo de Bulnes ascended for the first time, dressed in espadrilles and rope esparto grass, (Gregorio Pérez made the ascent barefoot) and giving name to the pioneering route of the Picu Urriellu “Pidal y Cainejo”, the Naranjo de Bulnes has not stopped receiving visits. Large openings such as the Murciana 78 ‘or the Rabadá Navarro (and many others) are still desired today by climbers and alpinists from all over the world, thus visiting the Picos de Europa in search of this great monolith, which rises defiantly calling attention to kilometers away, clearly seen from the beaches of Asturias and Cantabria.

Do I need previous experience in traditional rock climbing?

For those with no experience I recommend doing a previous day of climbing that I will adapt to the subsequent activity.

If you have little experience in climbing, it is usual to climb the South side of the Naranjo de Bulnes, but there are also many routes for intermediate levels, such as the Amistad con el Diablo route on the East side of Picu or more advanced, such as the Murciana route 78 on the west side of the Picu Urriellu.
