VÍAS FERRATA IN CANTABRIA · PABLO ALONSO, AEGM GUIDE TO CLIMBING IN PICOS DE EUROPA.
The beautiful via ferrata of Camaleño in Picos de Europa is located in the village of Los Llanos, under the Picos de Europa with incredible views, an unforgettable feeling of height, short duration but strong sensations with respect to its verticality, has several alternatives of escape and progression.
It is an ideal ferrata for beginners, not very demanding but very fun.
Duration: 2 hours
Basic difficulty
Would you like to learn to climb but prefer to try something a little gentler? Via Ferratas are a good option for you.
This is a route on a wall with tetra zero rungs and a life line to which we are anchored throughout its itinerary, which will allow us to progress safely and with some ease on a vertical wall that otherwise would only be possible by climbing.
This type of activity is aimed at people who want to start climbing but have a bit of respect and want to try something simpler, or simply for adventurous people who are looking for a fun experience in which they will get to know another perspective of these walls and this unique landscape.
The wonderful Liébana Valley offers us two Ferratas of medium difficulty with possible variants, in addition to being able to be practiced with children in some of its sections: The via ferrata of Camaleño and La Hermida.
How does it develop?
The via ferrata located in the valley of Camaleño, called ferrata de Camaleño or ferrata de los Llanos, is very popular due to its verticality, short duration, easy access and descent.
While doing this ferrata, we can contemplate at all times behind us splendid views of the Eastern Massif of Picos de Europa.
The following is a brief description of the route:
The first pitch is approximately 25 meters high, at about six meters we find a traverse to the left that drops a little. Next, a plummeting exit until almost halfway up the wall.
We continue along a ledge that we access by walking down a small slope to the left where we have to descend a couple of meters to continue with the second pitch.
This second pitch is a little easier than the previous one and is approximately the same height, with only one overhanging step in the middle of the pitch that is easily surmounted.
Then we have another terrace, which following the life line will take us to the third wall of the ferrata, the most aerial and spectacular. Climb straight up until you reach a horizontal traverse for a couple of meters and then ascend with a slight trend to the right until you reach below the base of the large overhang visible from the parking lot.
Once here, we have three options: OPTION 1, heading left: A Tibetan bridge of about ten meters that will take us under the overhang. After passing the bridge, we have a fairly aerial but relatively easy traverse of about three meters. Then begins a slightly overhanging wall of about four or five meters that will lose verticality. After about ten meters we will arrive at a small overhang where there is a fairly large welded slab that it is advisable not to step on or touch, this step can be easily overcome to the right of the slab without touching it at any time.
After overcoming this we find an easy and aerial vertical wall of approximately fifteen meters that leads to the summit.
OPTION 2: This section crosses over the large overhang in a horizontal traverse to the left. It is the most difficult variant (k5) and previous experience is required.
OPTION 3: The latter ascends to the summit without crossing the Tibetan bridge or the new section. This is the shortest and easiest option to finish the via ferrata.
Once we have chosen one of the options we have, we will reach the summit. A bench and a wooden table are waiting for us, perfect to have a snack while we contemplate the impressive views of Picos de Europa. There is also a poster with a photo of the Eastern Massif with the names of the peaks that can be seen from this wonderful viewpoint.
The descent is on the well-marked and visible trail that descends to the left. It is an easy descent but it is advisable to wear good shoes because in certain sections it is quite slippery.
*ATTENTION: As a mountain guide I recommend to people with little or no experience the possibility of being accompanied by a guide, since he/she will be able to solve any problem, besides knowing the environment.
To carry out this activity without sufficient experience implies the risk of not completing the route and, even worse, of suffering accidents.
For those who do have knowledge, I recommend, in addition to the mandatory equipment required (helmet, harness, dissipative tape), the use of an auxiliary anchor line, gloves, simple rope and self-rescue equipment.
